Adding or Changing Your Log-In Password in Windows XP

Posted by staffwriter in Tech Tips

Today, we’re going to set or update your password on your Windows XP computer.  But first, let’s take a look at passwords.  According to Microsoft Security, a good password is long, complex, and most importantly, one that you will remember.  Now think to yourself, are any of my passwords secure?  I say “any”, because I’m sure you have more than one password, right?  If you don’t, or want to get some new passwords created, follow the Microsoft Security Guide for creating your password.

Once you have a secure password to use for logging into your system, do the following steps:

1. Get to your User Accounts Screen

From the Start Menu, open Control Panel. Once in Control Panel, click on the User Accounts icon. Next select the account you want to set a password for. For this tutorial, we’ll use the “Owner” user account.

Start->Control Panel

Select "User Accounts"

Choose the account you want to change

2. Set (or Change) Your Password

Once you have selected your account, it’s time to set (or change) your password. If you haven’t set a password yet,  then you will have to select “Create a Password” from the menu. If you have already set a password, then select “Change My Password”, and then enter your current password when asked. Now that you are in the password creation screen, enter your password, and enter it again to make sure you didn’t make an error when typing it the first time. After that, you may choose to add a hint. Hints can be useful in helping you remember what password you chose to use, but make sure that the hint will only help you, not every person who looks at it. In other words, don’t just write the password here.

If this is your adding a password for the first time:

Click "Create a password"

Type your password and hint

If you’re changing your password:

Enter your current password, then your new one

3. Completing the Process

Once you have entered your password and hint, click “Create Password”. If this is your first time creating a password, you might be asked if you want to make your files and folders private. We suggest you click “Yes, Make Private”.  That’s all! Enjoy your updated, more secure user account!

Now you're just that much safer!
